Exeland Rod and Gun Club

NEXT MEETING: Sunday, April 23rd @ 2:30

Minutes of the March 19th meeting

Dean’s Financial Report showed a Fund Raising account balance of $2,060 and a General Fund account balance of $23,360. The Trout Fest ATV raffle prize has been paid for and Dean will soon be ordering raffle tickets. Dean further reported we have 114 paid memberships (as of 3-19) and as has been our custom, memberships not paid by April 30th will no longer receive monthly mailings and will not be able to attend the annual hunters ball in November.

Robert reported that plans for the Kids Fishing Expo (scheduled for May 19th) are proceeding nicely. The schools have been contacted, Gadwill has enough fish and the poles are on site. Speaking of poles, we paid $17.50 per unit from Hayward Bait & Tackle. A price check from Cabela’s, Gander Mt and Scheels showed a range of $24.99 to $29.99 each. So we got a good deal by buying locally plus because of SCOPE’s assistance we don’t pay 5.5% sales tax. One last thing – Robert will need help cleaning the pavilion prior to the event on the May 19th.

The Exeland Association has requested to use our clubhouse for their annual Spaghetti Feed on April 21st. Good deal for both organizations.

Robert was asked to put together a cost estimate to finish off the interior of our storage garage to make it usable during Trout Fest. If practical, the building could be used as a bar during the Bean Bag Tourney, headquarters for the Texas Hold’em card game and a cleaner, more sanitary serving area for the Sunday chicken dinner.

The 25th Anniversary Trout Fest is scheduled for Sept 1-2-3. Jimmy Trout ran thru a long list of things that he’s already done and another long list of things that still need to be taken care of. One neat new addition to this year’s festivities is Jim invited all 24 former Trout Fest Queens to attend and 23 replied “YES!” There will be a notable change to the 4wheeler raffle - rather than give merchandise as 2nd and 3rd prizes we decided to give cash - $500 and $250 respectively. Another important item is finding a Chairperson for the running race on Saturday. Without an archery course this year we can use the nature trail as a race track, eliminating the hassle of dealing with the damn railroad and getting police assistance for traffic control. May also be able to use the same race track for a Sunday bicycle course, but we need a member to step up and take charge of both those events.

Speaking of stepping up, Doc Earnhart grabbed reins and will be working thru the process of getting a DNR grant for improvements to our rifle range.

Mike Paul and Brad Beise tag-teamed a nice report on what’s happening with their involvement on the County Deer Advisory Council. They’ll continue to keep us posted. The Conservation Congress spring hearings will be April 10th and Al outlined some items of local and statewide interest.

Spring Turkey Season is upon us and we decided to award $50 to the member that bags the biggest bird. The measurements will be a combination of spur lengths and beard length or lengths if it has more than one beard, as some do. No entry fee (other than your paid membership). Should be a fun little contest and naturally the winner will be expected to buy $49 worth of beer.

Steve Phelps let us know Exeland may finally get an approved ATV route from Weirgor into town. So all you members that have years been dodging the cops and wardens will have to find a new way to have fun.

At the April meeting Robert will provide a schedule of work nights for dock repair and installation. Needs to get done before the kids show up and the trout get delivered. With enough help this can be pretty fun and easy, not mention free refreshments.

Had 15 members at the Feb meeting and 32 in March. As president those extra bodies sure makes running the meeting easier and more productive. Jim also greatly appreciated the extra input towards Trout Fest decisions. Hope you all can make to the April meeting on the 21st. And BRING ANOTHER MEMBER WITH YOU !!

Personal message from the Club President: Thanks to all of you for calls, cards, kind words and prayers after passing of my mother.

Much Appreciated - Al Gerber
